Title: Prefecture of Fokida / Municipality of Delphi Descriptive info: / Municipality of Delphi.. Delphi with a population of 1,500, is one of the most beautiful and impressing landscapes of Greece, and the centre -"o m p h a l o s "- of the world, according to the ancient myth.. It was already inhabited in the prehistoric times and later -especially during the classic times- obtained great historic importance, as it has been linked with the most significant events of Greek history.. Apollo, the God of catharsis and the genuine oracle, dominated earlier forms of worship in the Delphi.. He taught people the "metron", that is prudence and modesty, which became the most ethical and peaceful expression of the Greek spirit.. The famous O r a c l e of Delphi, where the god's divination was given through the mouth of Pythia, was directed by the so-called priesthood, that is priests with deep mystic education.. Moreover, Delphi with the renowned Amphictyonic institution, gave the signal for friendship, brotherhood and peaceful coexistence of peoples, as a fundamental goal of the Delphic idea.. A quite spectacular proof of the world-wide prestige enjoyed by the temple of the God of Light was the amount of votive offerings by leaders, towns and rich citizens, great in both quality and artistic value; unfortunately, very few of them have survived through the time.. Monuments.. Today the visitor can admire various interesting architectural monuments, as, in the northwest, one of the best preserved stadium of antiquity, dating from the roman ages (a s t a d i u m had already been there since the 2nd half of the 5th century BC).. The stadium hosted the Pythian games, which were very important in Greece and took place every four years.. In the northeast, there is the sacred place (temple), surrounded by a wall, contains, amongst other things, the dorian Temple of A p o l l o (4th century BC), a t h e a t e r for 5,000 spectators, where in 1927 and in 1930 Aggelos and Eva Sikelianou organized for the first time since antiquity ancient drama plays, as well as a set of Ηtreasures", mall buildings in the shape of a chapel, which various countries dedicated to the Sanctuary to keep the precious offerings.. The visitor can get an idea of these buildings by visiting the erected Treasures of the A t h e n i a n s.. The most important treasure appears to be the Treasure of Sifnioi , especially for its ... of the A r t s S c h o o l as well as many stores and workshops of folklore art.. The Municipality of Delphi now includes: C h r i s s o , which was named after the ancient town of "Krisa", built, according to Homer- in the 14th or 15th BC.. Traces of ruins of the walls of ancient Krisa, destroyed by the Amfiktions during the first Holy war, around 590 BC, are saved in Stefani hill, at the south of the town.. The Hippodrome of Delphi where the world famous "Pithia" races used to take place, was situated there in ancient times, at the beginning of the plain that has been planted all over with olive oils, the so-called ΗKrisaio Pedio " (Krisean Field) which stretched to the sea of Itea.. Today, Chrisso is a nice little town, with houses (many of which are built in a neoclassical style, example of the prosperity of the people those days, mainly due to olive products), surrounded by green gardens, two picturesque squares with two age old planes, traditional tavernas, polite and hospitable people, farmers in their m a j o r i t y.. The Monastery of Profitis Ilias is situated 7 km north-west of Chrisso.. You can access the Monastery only through Delpho, using the same asphalt road.. Built in a magnificent location, at a height of 400m.. , oversees the vast olive plantation of Amfisa, the Corinthian Gulf, Galaxidi and the mountains of P e l o p o n i s s o s.. The monastery became widely famous because during the Revolution in 1821 it was the base of operations and the Shelter Municipal Region of the fighters of East Greece, until August 1825, when the Turks utterly destroyed the old Temple which was erected in the same location later, in 1834.. The monastery was set on fire by the Italians, in February 1943.. It was gradually erected from 1961 and onwards.. Especially during the recent years, after it became a female monastery, significant maintenance works have taken place that give an emphasis to the old structures of the m o n a s t e r y.. Today, the visitor can admire mainly the very nice woodcut icon screen of the temple with representations from the Old and the New Testament, work of a great artist from Ipiros, as well as the valuable library with manuscripts and letters from the time of the revolution..
